Prayers for every condition

We pray not in one theme tonight, but in many. No one condition is ever all there is. And in every one, without exception, divine love is already present.

Welcome to Prayer on a Wednesday.

My name is Jacinda. I am your host. Our prayers are all of equal importance here.

All prayers and pray-ers welcome.

A reminder that we pray in the Unity tradition here — affirming prayer that reminds us that we are all children of the Most High God, and that our thoughts, words, and actions are all part of the praying process.

Today we pray not in one theme, but in many, for all the conditions of the human heart, mind and body. So tonight hold the brokenhearted, the sick, those in financial hardship, those in psychological distress, those who cannot see the way forward, those whose fear has become too large to hold, and those who carry the weight of the world. So come on in, gather all the conditions of your own heart, mind and body, and together we pray.

We pray knowing that divine love is already present in every one of these conditions.

‘Now is the acceptable time. Now is the day of salvation.’ (2 Corinthians 6:2, NRSV)

Check that you are on mute, and we will be free to speak our affirmative prayers boldly, out loud, with authority, in our spaces of prayer.

Let us begin.

Relaxation

We first seek stillness, and then the silence follows.

We breathe.

We relax.

We settle.

And right where we are, God is.

Concentration

For each condition today, a scripture, a voice from history, and a first affirmative prayer.

FOR THE BROKENHEARTED

‘He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.’ (Psalm 147:3)

Our hymn-prayer this evening — Horatio Spafford wrote these words after losing his four daughters at sea. A prayer declaration of universal truth still held, even in his absolute brokenheartedness.

When peace like a river attendeth my way,

when sorrows like sea billows roll,

whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say:

It is well, it is well with my soul.

(Horatio Spafford, ‘It Is Well With My Soul,’ 1873)

We affirm:

The healing love of God is present in every broken place.

Where there is pain, God is already there.

FOR THE SICK

‘I am the Lord who heals you.’(Exodus 15:26)

Myrtle Fillmore’s healing prayer, spoken to the cells of her own body:

I am a child of God and therefore I do not inherit sickness.

The life of God flows through me now.

We affirm:

Divine life flows freely through every cell, every tissue, every organ.

Wholeness is my nature.

I am being restored. I am restored.

FOR THOSE IN FINANCIAL HARDSHIP

‘My God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory.’ (Philippians 4:19)

Charles Fillmore taught that prosperity is a flow, not a reward for output. When we align with God as source, the channel opens.

God is my instant, constant, and abundant supply.

Divine love now dissolves and dissipates every thought of poverty and lack.

Divine love now produces and maintains unlimited and unfailing prosperity.

We affirm:

God is my unfailing source.

Divine abundance flows freely through my life.

I am open and receptive to all my good.

FOR THOSE IN PSYCHOLOGICAL DISTRESS

‘Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. Not as the world gives do I give to you.’ (John 14:27)

The peace Jesus speaks of is the ground of being, undisturbed beneath every disturbance. Nothing can take this peace from us.

Peace, perfect peace, in this dark world of sin?

The blood of Jesus whispers peace within.

We affirm:

The peace of God is present beneath every appearance of disturbance.

Divine order governs my mind.

I am held in perfect peace.

FOR THOSE SEEKING GUIDANCE

‘I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go.’ (Psalm 32:8)

In Unity, guidance rises from within. The still small voice. The inner knowing. The hunch. The nudge. The idea.

Lead, kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom, lead thou me on.

The night is dark, and I am far from home; lead thou me on.

We affirm:

Divine wisdom rises in me.

The right path opens before me.

I am guided in all things.

Thank you my Lord, my Light, my Love.

FOR THOSE FACING FEAR AND ANXIETY

‘Perfect love casts out fear.’ (1 John 4:18)

Fear throws dust in our eyes and hides the mighty spiritual forces that are always with us. Blessed are those who deny ignorance and fear and affirm the presence and power of Spirit.

Do not fear. Do not be troubled.

The presence you seek has never left you.

Return to stillness and you will find it there.

(Desert Fathers tradition, 4th century)

We affirm:

I am centred in divine love.

That love dissolves all fear.

I breathe in peace.

I am safe in God.

FOR THOSE WHO CARRY THE WEIGHT OF THE WORLD

‘Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.’ (Matthew 11:28)

Above all, trust in the slow work of God. We are, quite naturally, impatient in everything to reach the end without delay. And yet it is the law of all progress that it is made by passing through some stages of instability - and that it may take a very long time. Give Our Lord the benefit of believing that his hand is leading you, and accept the anxiety of feeling yourself in suspense and incomplete.

In deliberate awareness, accept what you are feeling. And then...

We affirm:

I release what I cannot carry.

I trust the love that holds all things.

The peace I seek for the world, I first find within.

Meditation

We move now into silence.

We will remain together in stillness. There is nothing to do. Nothing to solve, fix or improve here. Simply be present to the presence.

‘Be still, and know that I am God.’ (Psalm 46:10)

[Silence]

And as we return: begin to feel the edges of your space again. The chair beneath you. The room around you. The screen that holds us together.

Realisation

Now we speak the truth. These are affirming prayers drawn from published Unity of NZ resources.

  1. Wholeness is my true nature. I return to it now.

  2. Cell by cell, I am being restored to health. The life of God flows freely through every part of my being. I am whole.(Unity Daily Word)

  4. I am held. My children are held. Divine order is at work in my family right now.

Appreciation

We give thanks for every broken heart, every aching body, every anxious mind — for in every one of these, love was already present before we prayed. We did not bring love to these conditions. We found it there.

Divine love is present in every condition. It was there before we arrived. It will remain when we leave.

We give thanks for every seeker, every frightened soul, every person who came tonight carrying what felt too heavy to carry alone. The ground held you through all of it. It holds you now.

You may rest. The slow work of God is already underway. All shall be well.

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come; thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory,

for ever and ever. Amen.

The light of God surrounds me.

The love of God enfolds me.

The power of God protects me.

The presence of God watches over me.
