Bringing our requests to God

Orientation

All pray-ers and all prayers welcome. No right or wrong way to pray. We are offering Unity style prayer here - moving through the five steps of Unity Prayer.

There is nothing to fix in your life. This is our active participation in remembering who God is, and who we are in God.

Let’s think for a moment about, say, the cost of living. Business owners needing forward moving action that moves the needle. Or people feeling stuck or considering decisions that are to be made.

Decisions can be discovered, and prayer is helpful for that. Take the pressure off making a decision and instead relax into a decision process that is more like a decision unfoldment. The peace that passes all understanding,

In prayer, we are plugging into the Source of our life, and a natural outworking of prayer is that we realign with Truth. So not so much a ‘fixing up,’ more like ‘a straightening up’ or ‘realignment’ to the truth of who God is.

I may at times say a word or phrase that jars with you. Don’t worry about that, let the upset drop away for the moment, and stay with the prayers. We bring all of us to prayer, our back story, our adventures from today, the unfinished tasks in our line-of-sight etc. If anything upsets up, just let it go and recentre on the the moment of prayer.

Theme: Working with the writing of Eric Butterworth, in particular from his book In the Flow of Life (this is a working text for the Unity Licensed Teacher Training programme and a good one to have on hand for your personal study).

These prayers aren’t a one-hit wonder. This is a lifetime of application simply contained in some paragraphs here tonight. Revisit these prayers, often, for reflection, for re-alignment, for pleasure and for ease.

Relaxation

Welcome. Thank you for being here.

For all that you have your hands, head and heart in today, thank you for being here to pray.

We begin our prayer time, this grand adventure in Truth and of stepping in to the flow of our life.

Let’s see where we are. And guided relaxation. Look at this thing I call ‘my life’ … here it is.

Concentration

To pray like this, is an act of remembering who we are, and who God is.

Our Scriptures to wash ourselves a little with -a bit of spiritual perfume:

  • 2 Timothy 1:6 ‘I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you.’

  • Luke 17:21 ‘The kingdom of God is within you.’

Read Page 24-25 -

‘Jesus urged … For it is simply our consent, our way of saying yes to the flow, which is the Father’s good pleasure in us and for us.’

I’m in the flow of life, I am, I am, I am, I am, I’m in the flow of life.’ A few times together.

Making the prayer even more personal:

‘I am the flow of life, I am, I am, I am, I am, I am the flow of life.’

Imagine this as being so.

I think, I feel, I dream, I imagine, I believe, and I know it to be so, that I am the flow of life.

Denials and affirmations to help us prepare for silence:

Of old beliefs:

I deny any old beliefs about right and wrong ways to pray any power over my life.

I deny any old beliefs about right and wrong ways to believe, any power over my life.

I affirm that every aspect of my mind, my body and my soul is brought into perfect and harmonious alignment with the Truth of who God is.

I affirm that, though I may not yet know fully what this Truth is, I do know that nothing separates me from the Love of God.

I deny that any limiting beliefs keep God at a distance.

I affirm that right where I am, God is.

I affirm truth found in the Christian Scriptures, that say, God is Light, God is Love, that I Am a child of the Most High God.

I think of my life, here now. Here are the categories by which we may take a sweeping view of our present circumstances - we used these last week, and the categories come from Stuart Wilde’s book “Life Was Never Meant To Be A Struggle”.

So thinking of our lives now, concentrate on these areas as I read them to you, allow the thoughts to come, the feelings to rise, and then let them be. Avoid labelling anything you note as ‘good’ or ‘bad’. That’s not any of your business. A sweeping overview of your life…

  1. Your Physical Body

  2. Your Emotional Balance

  3. Your Relationships

  4. Your Physical Living Circumstances

  5. Your Finances

  6. Your Attitude to the World Around You

  7. Your Ability to Handle Conflict

  8. Your Ability to Handle Stress

  9. Your Psychological State

  10. Your Spiritual Balance

Eric Butterworth offers a definition of God in which you should be able to see that God is IN ALL that you call ‘your life’:

God is a sphere whose centre is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere.

Divine law is always at work.

In every area mentioned above, God is at work.

Even, regardless of whether or not we pray!!! … the law is at work. Amazing.

And so, we simply align ourselves with truth, we step into the flow of our lives, and we pray.

Read page 25-26

‘Jesus said, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons [and daughters] of your Father” (Matt 5:44-45). But how can we do that after what they have done? They certainly don’t deserve love. That may well be true, but it is irrelevant. The point is, by indulging in enmity, no matter what the provocation, we lose our consciousness of the flow. The need, then, is to become re-established in the consciousness of this inward-out flow of life. This is what Jesus meant when He said “that you may be sons [and daughters] of your Father.” Why destroy ourselves because of what someone else has done or not done? This is precisely what we do when we frustrate the creative power of love. Jesus was saying, “Let go - and let flow!”’

And into our time of meditation, we gently go.

Meditation

Let us enter the silence together. Still a little bit of my voice, so not a true, deep silence, but an opportunity to go within none the less. Notice if you want to lower your gaze more or close your eyelids.

Of course, with closed eyelids we still remain with sight and vision. And our mindful breathing, gently it flows, in and out. There it is, the breath moving past the nose, in and out, and so we breathe our life. Or, our life breathes us. Life breathes us.

The Life of God breathing in,

the life of God breathing out.

The life of God contained in my still body,

the life of God flooded my still and quiet mind.

We remember now a central truth of Unity teaching:

There is only one Presence and one Power in the universe and in our lives - God is omnipotence (all powerful). God, or Life, as the creative force, expressing as you, as me, as all life.

And God is omniscience (all knowing). God, or Life, as Divine Mind contains all knowledge and right understanding concerning my life, your life, and all life.

And God is omnipresence (present everywhere). God, or Life, is the indwelling presence, the life within you, within me, within us all - ‘the kingdom of God is within you.’

Again, the Kingdom of God is within you.

Our silence, our pause. In this silent time, we allow time and space for remembering God.

For realigning. For allowing the sphere whose centre is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere, to bring us back to the flow of our life.

Instead of concentrating on the appearance, we turn our awareness to divine reality. Instead of rehearsing the problem, we remember God.

God is infinite life expressing everywhere. God is divine intelligence ordering all things. God is love dissolving fear. God is substance supporting every right idea.

Let these words settle into consciousness. Our silence, our pause.

Even when appearances suggest disorder, Spiritual Law remains constant and dependable.

Eric Butterworth reminds us that we do not overcome conditions by struggling with them, but by awakening to the truth of our being. So we awaken now.

I am not separate from God. I live, move, and have my being in divine life. The Christ presence in me is calm, clear, and steady. Our silence, our pause.

Release the need to solve anything in this moment. Release the habit of mental strain.

There is a deeper intelligence already at work. Divine Mind knows the way. Divine Love harmonizes relationships. Divine Life restores energy and vitality. Divine Substance meets every need.

Let awareness rest in God rather than in the condition. This is the Golden Key in prayer: remembering God as the only power. Our silence, our pause.

Realisation

Silently affirm:

God is my help in every need. The Christ in me is my wisdom. Divine order governs my life. All things are working together for good.

Why, dear ones, would we dare ruminate on the troubles of the day?

Why beautiful souls, would we bother to judge ourselves and others and the world around us, as being unlovable, unloving, unapproachable, or unaccepting?

From time in silence, we affirm that we live our lives as ‘living souls of infinite potentiality to be discovered and released, for we live our lives from within - out.’

Repeat: we affirm that we live our lives as ‘living souls of infinite potentiality to be discovered and released, for we live our lives from within - out.’

Look, the time is now. The time for what? For whatever it is that we’ve been thinking will be ours later. No, the time is now.

What is rising within you now? Turn the camera off if you need, or close your eyelids again, and dare to unblock the dam in your life.

See your creativity. See your agency. See your life as the Good that it is.

Can you see your creativity as a sphere whose centre is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere?

How about your agency, with the things that are YOURS alone to do.

Be it tidying a room, getting homework completed, following up leads and closing the deal, delivering on your promises, and finishing what has been started. Together we affirm that the room tidying, the homework finishing, the deals closed, the promise delivered is divinely ordered and has a perfect outcome for all concerned.

What were we worrying about? Let’s not ruminate, but affirm the infinite potentiality outworking in and through our lives.

We realise Jesus said ‘you will know the truth.’ Not, you will know about the truth. But, you will know the truth. Affirm all that you know to be true. And if that’s not easy coming, just be still and know.

‘Be still and know that I am in the flow

and, ‘Be still and know that I am the flow.’

Appreciation

And we give thanks. Out of our hearts flow rivers of living water (John 7:38). For all that we see, feel, and know to be so, we give thanks that our lives are in the flow of life.

And we give thanks, that you God, Life, Love … do keep us in perfect peace, when our minds are stayed on you (Isaiah 26:3). We give thanks now. Grateful for the presence of God within. Grateful for spiritual law in action. Grateful for the quiet certainty of divine guidance.

Take a slow, deep breath.

Feel the life of God moving through you now.

When you are ready, gently return your awareness to the room and the zoom room too.

In our tradition, the Lord’s prayer.

And so it is, amen.

Thank you for being here, bringing your light, your smiles, your quietly held secrets of the heart and any struggles of the mind. Thank you for replacing the thoughts of illness, worry, lack, fear and untidiness, with thoughts of the sphere whose centre is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere.

Replay these prayers once during the week - an early morning, midday re-set or an evening time. And we will meet again next week and continue with our Life of Flow.
