OUR MISSION

Unity, is a spiritual movement that emphasises positive thinking, prayer, and the power of the mind in creating a fulfilling and abundant life. The primary mission of Unity is to promote spiritual growth and transformation through the practice of Unity principles and teachings. Unity teaches that individuals can experience a deeper connection with the divine by recognising the presence of Spirit as an omnipresent power and by applying spiritual principles in their daily lives.

Welcome to Unity of New Zealand

The Unity movement, also known as Unity Church or Unity School of Christianity, is a spiritual organisation that originated in the United States in the late 19th century by Myrtle and Charles Fillmore. Myrtle Fillmore in the early 1900’s healed herself of Tuberculosis and Charles paying a particluar interest in her teachings, also healed himself of many ailments. They then took those mystical practices to teach and heal others around the world.

While Unity incorporate elements of Christianity, such as the teachings of Jesus Christ, Unity is considered a New Thought movement rather than a traditional Christian denomination.

Unity emphasises spiritual principles such as the power of positive thinking, prayer, prosperity, intention, manifestation, meditation, metaphysical bible teachings and the innate divinity or oneness of all individuals.

We draw from various spiritual traditions, including Christianity, but also incorporate ideas from metaphysics, eastern spirituality, and other philosophical teachings.

While Unity acknowledges Jesus Christ as a spiritual teacher, it interprets Christian teachings in a metaphysical and non-literal manner, focusing on personal growth, inner healing, and spiritual transformation.

Overall, Unity can be considered a spiritual movement with Christian roots, but its beliefs and practices extend beyond traditional Christianity, embracing a broader perspective on spirituality and personal development.

Unity is a way of life and teaches, “How to think, not what to think” giving people the opportunity to follow their own spiritual path in a loving, accepting and nurturing environment.

Unity encourages the application of five spiritual principles in daily life, emphasizing the importance of love, compassion, forgiveness, and positive thinking. The five principles are:

“GOD IS” - OMNIPRESENT DIVINITY

God is not a human-like figure residing in the sky, ready to grant wishes or inflict punishment. Instead, we believe in an Omnipresent God/Essence/Universal Force, with human beings as expressions of this Divinity. This power represents absolute goodness, omnipresent in all life forms. We trust in this force as the eternal, infinite, and unchanging principle of good. Our ongoing spiritual growth is essential for embodying our inherent essence of God's goodness, symbolised as a guiding force imbued with omnipresence, omnipotence, and omniscience.

“I AM” - DIVINE LOVE

Human beings have a spark of divinity within them, the Christ Spirit within.  Their very essence is of God and therefore they are also inherently good.  This is our experience of God as personal.  Jesus’ one commandment was to love.  Therefore, we embrace God as divine love within each of us.  We are the Light and Life of God in expression.

“I THINK” - THE LAW OF MIND ACTION

Human beings create their experiences by the activity of their thinking.  Everything in the manifest realm has its beginnings in thought.  Thoughts held in mind produce after their kind.  We do not manifest every thought we have – only those thoughts that we hold in thought and infuse with our power of faith and imagination. 

“I PRAY” - AFFIRMATIVE INTENTIONS

Prayer is creative thinking and perception that opens our awareness to our innate Oneness with God. Prayer is communion with the Divine with powerful affirmative intentions. Affirmative Prayer activates wisdom, healing, prosperity, peace, love—all that is the highest good.

“I LIVE” - AUTHENTICITY AND WALK THE TALK

Knowing and understanding the laws of life, also called Truth, are not enough. A person must also live the truth that s/he knows - authentically. We are continually in the process of developing our light of consciousness—our ability to fully know and live from our Oneness with that life essence and omnipresence we call God.

It's important to note that Unity is not a traditional Christian denomination with a centralised hierarchy but consists of a network of independent Unity spiritual centres globally. Each Unity community may interpret and express these principles in its own unique way while remaining aligned with the core teachings of Unity.
